Tandy Emeritus Keyboard Adapter, Tandy DT-100 Terminal, and VCF Southwest 2024
The parade of modern hardware for the TRS-80 Model II/12/16/16B/6000 systems continues with the Tandy Emeritus keyboard adapter! I'll show off the adapter and enable virtual consoles in XENIX 3.3. As an added bonus, we briefly see my Optimus DCT-2000 Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) deck in action.

Let's Explore The Tandy Multimedia PC (MMPC Model 20)
Переглядів 386День тому
Let's dive into 1994's Tandy Multimedia PC (MMPC Model 20)! Is it a Tandy computer? Is it an AST? What software came on it? I'll answer these questions and more in my typically-peculiar way. Then, I restore the system and do a deep-dive and demo of the MMPC software that came with it. Finally, I install Microsoft Encarta 95 and the Microsoft Wine Guide and explore those programs a bit. What happens when a Subaru Legacy odometer reaches 999,999 miles? I want to know!

Different cars and odometer types have had different answers; so what happens with the Subaru Legacy, for which I have a few gauge clusters (combination meters) floating around. This one has been counting away since the summer, powered by a Raspberry Pi with a CAN Bus hat and some Python I wrote. This video covers the ...

    For a short time I was obsessed with the Agvision, Model 16, multiplexor box and the videotex experiment they did with the local newspaper there in TX. Interesting to note there was an option to download a binary image to run on the remote terminal from the videotex host. I guess maybe this would have made it possible to run some text based games via modem download.

    I have a DT-100 and a Wyse-50, and my favorite feature on both is that BADASS key click! Those really are excellent terminals. I don't use the DT-100 too much because it's effectively brand new, but the Wyse stays connected to one of my Linux boxes where I have getty and such running.

That bay on the front you show at 18:00 isn't actually for another floppy. It appears to be a spot for microphone and headphone jacks that they never used. Unfortunately, I'm not sure off-hand. I haven't used these systems with a monitor newer than about 2004 (a Dell LCD). That said, the only thing I can think to check is the jumper or switch to enable the on-board VGA. Most Tandy systems of this era let you enable or disable on-board video, so if it was disabled, you might get your issue. Beyond that, if there's expansion video RAM, it might be worth making sure it's socketed correctly. Tandy Notes and Jumpers will have some detail that might help. Thanks for watching! github.com/pski/model2archive/blob/master/Hardware/Notes%20and%20Jumpers/Notes_and_Jumpers_Sep_1993_Text.pdf

      @@TJBChris I had installed the 256kb video ram, and that appears to had crashed the built in video card. After removing them back to stock, it works. But seems that my four 1mb ram sticks do not work. Not sure if I have to do a setup utility, but I doubt that is the problem. My other problem is finding a 3 1/2 drive that has S0 settings to replace the Tandy floppy drive. Those are notoriously unavailable. I had to modify the tandy Floppy cable by cutting various grounds in the cable (found the modifications online), but a stock 3.5 drive wont work in S1 defaults. So I am waiting for a new drive I bought on Ebay. Other than that, it seems to work... but no way of getting stuff on the two hard drives in the system. It has a 120mb and a 80?mb. It also had a rare Tandy CDR-1000 drive, in good working order. That CD Rom drive cost about $500 alone if you can find one. Thanks.

      @@jacobew2000 Nice, progress is always good. To get into setup, try hitting F2 while it’s counting up the memory during POST. If not, and it boots, tvdog’s Tandy 1000 archive has setup programs for these systems. So you should be able to access it from DOS. With the CD drive, you’re on your way to a great early MMPC system for sure! Good luck!

    • @TJBChris
      @TJBChris 25 днів тому

      My best guess is most likely not - beyond the processor, it's not at all like the Mac, ST, or Amiga from an architectural standpoint. All IO (disk, video, keyboard, serial, etc.) for the 68000 subsystem is done through the Z80-side of the system, and the software running on the 68000 side has to work within that IO setup, requiring splitting of IO and application code between the two subsystems. And these systems lack real graphics capability by default...there's an add-on card available (again accessible via the Z80 IO subsystem). An interesting thought, though! Thanks for watching!

      If you don't mind using a modern keyboard, a group of people called Tandy Emeritus makes a USB keyboard adapter for these systems. Check out this link: www.tandy-emeritus.org/Our-Imaginings/#Keyboard_V2 I hope this helps. Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

    Very cool! I had a 4p back in the day, always wondered about this line. They were super expensive and was multi user Unix variant, not I, III, 4 compatible, but that's all i remember. You should do a little history lesson of the line. Thanks!!

      Thank you! Compared to the I/III/4 and the CoCo, I'm relatively new to the 8" systems. They're addictive and fun to explore. I did do a brief overview of the line in my SepTandy series in 2022. It's not super in-depth, but might be interesting for you. ua-cam.com/video/ksaLC-qWIe4/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!

    Looks like an upgrade that Tandy should have made themselves.

      There was a hi-res upgrade from Radio Shack as well. It’s a little different from the reproduction I installed from what I’m told. Both have similar capabilities, though. Thanks for waiting!

    I can't tell you what a Subaru odometer does after 999,999 miles, but I can tell you that you will be driving when you roll through cool odometer numbers (and thus can't take a photo of them)...

    Loved watching the videos. I recently got my hands on a Model 16. So, have been watching these as I got it back to running shape. I do have one question though. Where can you find these memory/mmu upgrades?

      @TJBChris 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and the compliments! You can find Tandy Emeritus, the folks who designed the memory and MMU upgrade (among others), at this link. There is a link to e-mail them on that site. Enjoy your Model 16! www.tandy-emeritus.org/

      @@TJBChris Thanks. I'll check out that link. It has been fun playing with it and bringing back memories from when I worked at a RadioShack when these came out :) Mostly have been playing with Xenix on it and using a F48.

    If only the Server had used a ZILOG Z800 or a ZILOG Z8000 you could be running a UNIX Server that could have speeded up the ability to get the file you want much quickly.

    I love your videos... but *please* consider investing in a tripod. The constant hand motion makes me nauseous after a while.

    • @TJBChris
      @TJBChris 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and the comment! I do use tripods, but also carry the camera around at times when it feels more appropriate. My channel is a one-person operation, so if you see me in-frame, the camera is on a tripod. I try to avoid moving around too much or too fast, but it doesn’t always go as planned. I appreciate the feedback and will try to make my free camera movements less chaotic in future videos.
